The Zombie Epidemic: Why So Many Men Have Stopped Feeling Alive
Men are still showing up, providing, performing and getting things done. But underneath it all, many have quietly stopped feeling fully present in their own lives.
Men are walking around like zombies.
Eyes glazed over. Heads down. Locked into their phones on the train, in the car park, at the kids' footy training. No presence. No awareness. Just that vacant, checked-out stare.
It's not one industry, one suburb, one type of bloke. It feels like an epidemic of exhaustion, flatness and lost joy — and I don't think most men are simply tired. I think they're overwhelmed by a way of living, and a way of being a man, that was never sustainable.
The Slavery No One Names
Modern-day slavery didn't disappear. It just got harder to recognise.
No chains. Instead, we have the mortgage, the school fees, the identity built entirely around being the provider — and a job you can't afford to leave even when it's costing you your health, your marriage, or the version of yourself your kids actually need.
Hustle gets praised as ambition. Exhaustion gets normalised. Rest gets mistaken for weakness. And the oldest script still runs underneath it all: don't stop, don't complain, don't need anything.
The cycle can look completely normal from the outside.
You wake up tired, work all day, come home depleted, numb out with a screen or a drink, and repeat it tomorrow.
You're functioning. But you're not functioning optimally. You're surviving — and calling it strength.
Years of pressure and never switching off doesn't just wear a man down. It changes him. The nervous system adapts. You stop feeling much of anything. You just keep going.
What We've Stopped Talking About
There's a layer most men never get permission to touch: what's actually driving the flatness. Constant stimulation and never any quiet. No real outlet for what's building up. No one to say it to, because men are still taught that needing support is a failure.
For those relying on medication just to get through the day, it's worth asking an honest question — not out of judgement, but out of care: what's actually being treated, and what's being masked because there's nowhere else for it to go?
Because what's usually missing is simple: sunlight, movement, purpose, real mates, a moment where nobody needs anything from you.
Sometimes what's missing is remarkably human.
Sunlight. Movement. Purpose. Real mates.
A moment where nobody needs anything from you.
Hiding From the Things That Keep You Alive
You see it everywhere — a beautiful weekend, and men indoors, scrolling instead of living. Shutting out the very things that would remind the body it's still alive.
A real conversation. Eye contact instead of a phone. A mate asking "how are you, actually" and waiting for the real answer.
It's becoming a lost art, and most men are quietly starving for it.
You were meant to feel. To connect. To actually be present for your own life, not just watch it go past.
This Isn't Just "What Being a Man Requires"
Maybe the biggest trick played on high-performing, exhausted men is convincing them this flatness is simply the cost of doing the job properly.
It isn't.
You were meant to do more than provide, perform and repeat. You were meant to feel. To connect. To actually be present for your own life, not just watch it go past.
Can you come back from this? I want to believe yes. But it starts with one honest look at how you're actually living — not someday. Now.
Come Back To Yourself.
If this hits close to home, that's the signal to pay attention to, not push past. The Realignment Journey exists for exactly this moment.
